Federal Pacific Panel Box

If your home was built between 1950 and 1990 and is equipped with a Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) circuit breaker panel with Stab-Lok circuit breakers, you have a high risk of breaker malfunction and fire.

Why are Federal Pacific breaker boxes dangerous?

Multiple tests done by the Consumer Product Safety Commission on Federal Pacific Electric circuit breakers since the 1980s proved that one in four Stab-Lok breakers had a unacceptably high rate of failure, which creates a safety hazard.

If that happens, the risk of fire becomes imminent.

Key Points:

  • Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) sold millions of panels between the 1950’s and 1980’s.

  • Testing proved that virtually every panel installed in the United States contains defective breakers.

  • FPE falsified their UL testing, making their UL listing void.

  • Approximately 1 out of 3 breakers are defective.

  • If a breaker fails to trip when it should, the wires in the home that are supposed to be protected can start on fire.

Do you have a Federal Pacific panel?

If your home is 25 to 65 years old, check your electric panel box. A Federal Pacific panel usually has its name or logo on the front cover. Inside, the name Stab-Lok is usually printed near the center or side of the panel (see picture below). The breakers will have the signature red strip that runs across the front.
